Visit the world famous monastery of Montserrat, 23 miles away from Barcelona. Enjoy a great short outing to this wonderful Natural Park, pilgrimage center, basilica, cultural hub and mountain climbers paradise. A trip to remember.
The magical and Holly Mountain of Montserrat or “serrated mountain” is a rocky massif that stands out in dramatic scenery at some 4,000 feet on the see level, perched on the Llobregat river. This unique landscape in the world, crisscrossed by several cable cars and funiculars, is a natural park and hosts a millennium old monastery built to worship the “Moreneta” (little black Madonna), -a 12th c. Romanesque wooden carving- in its luxurious shrine.
The Escolania (children’s choir), started in 1223, is the oldest music school in Europe still in function. Visitors to the basilica can enjoy their angel’s voices six days a week –not in July & August.
The Montserrat Benedictine abbey is also a cultural centre, including an impressive old library (300.000 books) and the art Museum, showing pieces from Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Greek times, the middle ages (Caravaggio, El Greco), to contemporary art: Picasso, Miró, Dalí or Tàpies.
It takes a bit longer than one hour to get there from Barcelona through an amazing panoramic winding road.
This outing can also be combined with a further visit to the Penedès wine and Cava County, or Sitges, on the coast.
