The costa Brava has two hidden extraordinary jewels of romantic coastline gardens that can take your breath away: Marimurtra in Blanes and Santa Clotilde in Lloret de Mar. An ideal setting awaits you in two lush, man made green paradises.

The Marimurtra gardens in Blanes.

A most privileged spot where to enjoy the local botanical richness, adorned with some neoclassical architectural corners amidst a breathtaking coastal landscape. A small paradise of the plant universe located next to the Mediterranean Sea.

With over 4,000 plant species from five different continents, Marimurtra helps visitors in the goal of getting to known the botany and the great landscapes of the Costa Brava, as well as the biography of Karl Faust, the founder of Marimurtra.

The diversity of species and microclimates in the Gardens allows visitors to travel across the world thanks to a stroll through the bamboo forest of the East, the arid extensions of America, some corners from Australia or the jungle pergola, to just mention a few.

The LINNÉ’S PAVILION is a unique architectural element in the Garden, adorning one of the most iconic corners of the shoreline, blessed with a romantic architecture and an exclusive location in the Costa Brava’s southernmost creek, Sa Forcanera.

Walking down the stairs leading to the Pavilion, notably in springtime, can be a joyful experience since the landscape is covered in fuchsia colour thanks to the carpets of the tiny cactus called Ice plant, creating some of the most beautiful and harmonious spots.

Marimurtra was created by KARL FAUST (1874-1952), a German entrepreneur extremely fond of natural sciences and botany who spent his energy and fortune to achieve his dream: in 1919 he commissioned architect Josep Goday the project of the house, garden and the Hellenistic pavilion. The Marimurtra Botanical Gardens were listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Catalan Government and was awarded with the SAINT JORGE’S CROSS in 2009.

Santa Clotilde gardens in Lloret de Mar.

In 1919 the Marquis of Roviralta commissioned the project of the Santa Clotilde Gardens to the architect and landscape gardener Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí. Perched on a hillside cliff with great views over the sea, seven acres of mediterranean vegetation were disposed in an orderly symmetry and proportion, helped by the trimming of plants which would shape them and create adorable spaces. The hilly terrain makes different elevation levels that are linked by stairways and ramps.

The monumental stairways -most notably the Mermaid staircase- are adorned by ivy on the risers of each step so that when seen from the bottom it gives the optical illusion of a waterfall of plants which, combined with mermaids and reproductions of Roman sculptures in one of the coastline’s most scenic views, becomes an idyllic romantic corner. Among them a statue of Cupid, surrounded by a semicircle of laurel bushes, recalls the Apollo and Daphne’s myth.

The plant life in the gardens is basically made out of pine and linden trees, poplars and a large predominancy of cypress trees, while the disposition of the flowering plants ensures that there are always some spots with blooming flowers all year round.

The gardens belonged to the Roviralta family until 1997 when the town council decided to acquire them, refurbish them and turn them into municipal gardens. In 1994 they were listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Catalan Government.

We really enjoyed the tour of Barcelona. We saw so many wonderful sites in such a short time, thanks to your ability to reschedule events due to our flight delay. Thought you would enjoy having this picture with the Levy boys – Jack, Jude and James. Should we return to the area, or have friends that visit, you’ll be the first person we recommend to show them around the city!

Ton-David Jover was the perfect guide for our first time visit to Barcelona. His extensive knowledge and experience are impressive, but it was his passion for sharing his love of his home and his heritage that made our tours with him unforgettable and our joint time together both informative and fun. Ton-David brought Gaudi to life as he walked us through Casa Batlló and Park Güell. It provided the perfect background for us to fully appreciate the incredible Sagrada Familia. Throughout our walking tour of the Old City, Ton-David gave us unique insights into both Catalan and Jewish history, bringing its people and buildings to life. We enjoyed the Picasso Museum immensely, as we learned about the artist’s early years and works. Our train trip to Girona was beautiful, and learning about the city through Ton-David’s words enabled us to understand what once was and is no longer. And of course, the food and cava! Ton-David shared our culinary interests and his recommendations were outstanding!
